Private Lawrence Harding Carpmael

Lawrence was born on December 5th 1883, the son of Ernest and Ann Carpmael. The family had very strong Dulwich connections, as not only was Lawrence the second of four brothers to attend the College, three of his uncles had also attended, as well as what would eventually amount to nineteen cousins! After leaving he spent some time working in the City, before, in 1906, travelling to Quebec in Canada and, a year later, moving to the U.S.
When war was declared he returned to Canada and signed up as a member of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, coming over to England during 1915, and from there going to the front in France. During 1916 Lawrence was badly wounded, and invalided back to England for several months, returning to battle in early 1917. On 9th April he was killed at Vimy Ridge, being shot by a machine gun shortly after going “over the top”.
