Private Eric Curt Rudolph Quitmann
Born on June 27th 1898, Eric was the fourth, and youngest, child of German furniture salesman Otto Quitmann, the second with his then wife, Lucy. He came to Dulwich in the spring of 1910, following in the footsteps of his two older brothers, Otto, who had already left the College, and Fritz, who was still a pupil. Eric’s time at Dulwich lasted until the end of 1914, at which time he left the College while a member of the Upper Third.
In April 1917 he joined the army, signing up as a Private in the Middlesex Regiment. The first three months of Eric’s service were spent stationed at Sevenoaks before being attached to the R.A.F., with whom he was based at Hastings. In early 1918 he returned to the Middlesex Regiment with whom he went over to France for the first time that February, and for the next several months was stationed on the Somme front. He died whilst being treated at the 26th Casualty Clearing Station, near Saint Riquier, on June 16th 1918, eleven days before his twentieth birthday.
