Naval Wireless Operator Leslie Hardwicke Wright
Born on October 28th 1899, Leslie was the son of George and Bessie Wright, who lived on Croxted Road. He spent time as a boarder at Westbury House School, Southsea, before coming to the College in May 1912. He went on to spend the next three and a half years at Dulwich, before leaving at the end of 1915, at which point he was a member of the Modern Lower Fifth.
After leaving Dulwich Leslie went to work in the London office of the High Commissioner of South Africa, where he worked for just over a year, before leaving his post in May 1917 in order to train as a Naval Wireless Operator. After four months he was fully qualified, and was assigned to the S.S. Coya, a coal transport ship plying its trade around the Mediterranean. In the summer of 1918 he fell seriously ill with endocarditis, which was apparently exacerbated by the strain of duty placed on him by being the only wireless operator on board. He eventually succumbed on August 29th, whilst on shore leave in Greece, and lies buried on the island of Syros.
