Private Godfrey Eric Nelson Williams
Born 28th January 1894, Herbert was a keen student throughout his attendance in Dulwich College. He regularly played for the 4th XV, and was a member of the school choir. Before the war Herbert was under employment of the Peninsular Oriental steamship company, until the outbreak of war led him to enlist in the 13th Kensington Battalion London Regiment. He sailed with the regiment for France on November 3rd, 1914, and was first in action at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle on March 9th, 1915.
Herbert was a well-respected and beloved throughout his entire Battalion, who knew him as ‘The General’ on account of his initials. He was killed in action in an attack on Aubers Ridge on May 9th, 1915.
