Trooper John Stanley West
Born 5th July 1892, he was the son of William, a Civil Servant, and Marian West. He joined the College in 1906 and left two years later, whilst a member of the Lower 3rd. After leaving school he went out to Chile to join his brother, who was in Valparaiso at that time.
When war broke out he returned from South America in order to join up, becoming a trooper in King Edward’s Horse in November 1914. Before he could go out to the front however he fell victim to a bout of pneumonia, which left a weakness from which his lungs never truly recovered, and John passed away on August 20th 1915, being buried in West Norwood Cemetery. Three months before his death his sister, Sarah, had married Douglas Leighton, a fellow OA.
