Corporal James Lindsay Turnbull

Born on August 11th 1886, on the island of Jersey, James was the youngest of seven children born to Scottish parents, landowner David Turnbull and his wife, Christian. He started at Dulwich in May 1901 and during his time at the College was a boarder in The Orchard. He left in the spring of 1905, having in his final year been both a member of the 1st XV, as well as Captain of the Swimming team. After leaving he went out to Iquique, Chile, where he spent several years working in the nitrate mines, before moving to South Africa in 1909. He spent the first two years after his arrival helping his brother, who was involved in ostrich farming, before in 1911 taking up a position with the Knights Central Mines, based in Johannesburg.

At the start of 1916 James volunteered for active service as a member of the South African Horse, and that April was sent to German East Africa. Later that year he fell seriously ill with malaria, from which he eventually died on October 31st. He was buried in Dar es Salaam War Cemetery, in modern-day Tanzania, and was survived by his widow and their son.
