Rifleman George Walter Hudson Stead

George was born on June 16th 1897 in Norwich, the son of James Lister Stead and his wife, Laura, Quakers who were originally from Yorkshire. He spent time at a Quaker-run boarding school in Acworth, back in Yorkshire, before coming to Dulwich in 1912, a path which would be followed around eighteen months later by his younger brother, Edward. After almost three years at the College he left in the spring of 1915 whilst a member of the Maths Remove.
In January 1916, nine months after leaving Dulwich, George enlisted in The Rangers. On June 16th, his nineteenth birthday, he travelled over to France to the front for the first time. On September 12th he was grievously wounded, dying as a result five days later at a Casualty Clearing Station in Corbie, near Amiens.
