Corporal Frederick Herman Stallman
Fred was born on August 30th 1891, the second child of a chemist and drug salesman, John Stallman, and his wife, Bertha, an American couple resident in London. He was educated at Parsonage House School, Dorking, for six years before, in September 1904, coming to the College at the same time as his elder brother, John. He remained at Dulwich for the next four years, leaving in the summer of 1908, after which he joined his father’s firm. He was also a keen entomologist; during his time at Dulwich he on several occasions won the Science Society’s entomology prize and later going on to join the South London Entomological Society, where, in 1915, he was elected to the Council.
In March 1916 Fred gave up his life in London and volunteered as a member of the London Rifle Brigade with whom he went to France three months later. He spent the rest of that summer serving through the Somme engagement and was later made Company Paymaster. In March 1917 he was in the process of applying for a commission when, on March 21st, he was seriously injured by a shell blast. His leg was amputated but he died of his wounds on Easter Sunday, April 8th.
