Rifleman James Speedy
Born 22nd December 1877, James was the son of Frederick and Mary Speedy and was one of four children. Having joined the school in 1892, he left in 1894 whilst a member of the Upper 3rd. From this time until the war little is known about what James did.
In May 1916 James signed up to the army with the 16th Battalion of the London Regiment (also known as the Queen’s Westminsters) and was sent to France fairly soon after this. Whilst in France he was transferred to the 12th Battalion (The Rangers). He was killed in action on the 7th October 1916 at Arras and is memorialised on the Thiepval Memorial.
