Leading Seaman Francis Robert Gerald Sharp
Born 6th June 1894, he was the fourth child of Robert, a carriage-builder, and Emmeline; his younger brother William John Addison Sharp would later follow him in becoming an Alleynian. Francis joined the College in 1904, and remained until the spring of 1909, leaving during his time in the Upper 4th. After leaving Dulwich he was to become an insurance clerk, as well as a member of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
Upon the outbreak of war, the active Naval Reservists who were not required at sea were called up to create the Royal Naval Division and it was while serving with Hawke Battalion of the RND that Francis was captured at Antwerp in October of 1914. He was to spend almost the entire war as a German POW, the majority of it at Doeberitz internment camp, before being moved to Holland in February of 1918. After his release and return to England he died in London, as a result of ill health, on December 1st 1918, and is buried at Beckenham.
