2nd Lieutenant Leslie Paton
Born on January 30th 1898, Leslie was the third son of British merchant William Paton and his wife, Jane, who were at that time resident in Valparaiso, Chile. By the time he was two, the family had settled back in England and they were resident in Dulwich when he and his elder brother, Ralph, started at the College in 1911. In 1915, which would turn out to be his final year at Dulwich, Leslie was a member of not only the 1st XI cricket team, in which he played alongside his brother, but also of the 1st XV.
At Christmas 1915 he took up a place at Sandhurst, where he was a Cadet for several months, passing out in August 1916 to take up a commission in the Royal Scots. Leslie went to France for the first time with his new regiment at the end of February 1917 and was assigned to the 11th Battalion. He was killed only a few weeks later, on March 21st, whilst leading an attack on a bombing post situated just behind German lines near Arras.
