Sergeant Frank Henry Newcomb

Frank was born on October 4th 1892, the second of six children born to a bank clerk, also named Frank Newcomb, and his wife, Blanche; of the six he was the only boy. He spent three years at the College, between Easter 1907 and Easter 1910, and during his last year was a member of the 3rd XV. After leaving Dulwich he went to Switzerland to continue his studies for a time, before returning to London where he took up a position in the head office of Ralli Bros., a major firm of general merchants.

In August 10th 1914, a week after the declaration of war, Frank enlisted for service as a member of The Queen’s, with whom he went over to the continent the following March. Shortly afterwards he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, and late that May was seriously wounded whilst serving in the trenches at Givenchy. He died as a result of his injuries shortly after, on May 26th, and lies buried in Bethune Cemetery.
