Private Charles Edward Buchanan Meredith

Charlie was born in Herefordshire on September 21st 1890, the youngest of nine children born to Henry Meredith and his wife, Lucy. By the time he was ten the family had moved to South London, and he joined Dulwich in 1903 and remained for five years at the College. He left at Easter 1908, whilst a member of the Mathematical Fifth, and entered the Commercial Union Insurance Company. In 1912 he was posted to Singapore, where his role meant that he was engaged in business throughout the region, regularly travelling to Java, Sumatra and Borneo.

Whilst in Singapore Charlie had also enlisted in the Singapore Volunteers, as a member of the Maxim Gun Section, and in the spring of 1915 his unit was called upon to help suppress a mutiny amongst the Indian soldiers. This involved a week serving in the jungle, hunting for snipers. Not long afterwards he returned to England, with the intention of taking a commission for full military service. Before he could do this however he had to undergo an operation on his nose, as a result of an issue with his adenoids. A few days after the operation he fell ill, and eventually pneumonia set in, from which he passed away on October 10th 1915.
