2nd Lieutenant William Harrod Martin
William was born on December 19th 1889, the eldest child born to solicitor Herbert Martin and his wife, Grace. He came to the College in the summer of 1902, having earned a scholarship, and during what would ultimately be six years at Dulwich he was a boarder in Blew House. After leaving in the summer of 1908 he went up to Wadham College, Oxford, where he took a First in Classical Moderations in 1910, and two years later a Second in Literae Humaniores.
At the outbreak of war in 1914 William was studying Law but gave it up that October in order to enlist in the London Regiment. He spent almost a year at the front, during which time he was wounded twice, before taking up a commission in the latter part of 1915. He subsequently returned to the front and was killed in a shell blast at High Wood, on the Somme, on September 14th 1916.
