Private Lester Raymond Hudson
Born on May 9th 1881, Lester was the youngest of ten children of Walter Hudson, a wine and spirits merchant, and his wife, Maria. He came to the College in September 1894, the only member of his family to do so, and was a Dulwich boy for the next three years. After leaving at the end of 1897 he spent time working in the city, including a period in his father’s company. Throughout this time he was also a committed reservist in the Queen’s Westminster Rifles. In around 1904 however he gave everything up in order to move to Western Canada, where he spent several years holding down a number of odd jobs. Eventually he settled down, and by the summer of 1914 he was managing a store in the small town of Beaver, Manitoba.
Lester voluntarily enlisted in the military in April 1915, and for a time was employed by the army in the Orderly Room because of his accounting skills. Shortly after Christmas 1915 he was sent to France for the first time, and subsequently stationed in the Ypres sector. In early June 1916 he was seriously wounded, and died as a result on June 10th, at the age of 35.
