2nd Lieutenant Edward Hoare

Edward was born in Newington, Surrey, on July 24th 1882, the second of four sons of a builder, also named Edward Hoare. He joined Dulwich at the beginning of 1896 and was at the College for almost three and a half years, leaving at Easter 1899. During his time at the College he had been joined by his younger brother, Alec, and two years after he left his youngest brother, Walter, would also come to Dulwich; in addition their sister Constance also married an OA, Albert Goosey. After Edward left the College he went into the timber trade, ultimately being head of a firm named Capjon & Hoare.
In early 1915 he underwent an operation in order to be passed fit for military service, and that November enlisted, taking up a commission in the 1st Battalion of the Grenadier Guards. He went overseas for the first time in April 1916, and was sent to the front line at Ypres. After mere weeks at the front he was killed in action on May 9th 1916, at the age of 33. He was survived by his widow, Lilian.
