Major Frederick Thomas Cecil Hill
Frederick was born on July 16th 1874 in Tavistock, Devon, the third son of army Lieutenant Arthur Hill and his wife Alice. He came to Dulwich in September 1889, and was only at the College for three months, leaving at the end of that year, just as his younger brother, Gerald, was joining. Several years after leaving he went to Sandhurst, passing out in March 1895 in order to take up a commission in the York and Lancaster Regiment. In 1897 he was promoted to Lieutenant, and four years later was transferred to the Middlesex Regiment, where he was promoted to Captain. Shortly afterwards he was employed as a member of the Army Accounts Department, where he worked for three years. In 1911 he stepped down from active service and was placed on retired pay.
Upon the commencement of hostilities in 1914 Frederick came out of retirement, volunteering his services once more. After spending several months involved in recruiting around Plymouth, that October he returned to a position with his original regiment, the York and Lancasters. Two months later he was promoted to Major, and the following summer he was involved in the campaign at Gallipoli. It was here that he fell, on August 8th 1915, whilst leading his men in an attack near Suvla Bay. He was survived by his widow, Marie, and their one son.
