Private Eric George Frederick Herrmann
Born on April 19th 1895, Eric was the middle of three children of Frederick Herrmann, a German-born ink manufacturer, and his British wife, Alice. He joined Dulwich in the spring of 1908, leaving three years later in the summer of 1911. After the College he was abroad for a time, before returning to study art at the City & Guilds College in London. He specialised in colour Chemistry and passed his final examinations in 1914.
Shortly after Eric had finished his studies war was declared, and the following March he enlisted as a member of the Universities and Public Schools Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. He went out to France for the first time that November, but was killed by a sniper later that month, on November 25th. He lies buried in the churchyard at Cambrin.
