2nd Lieutenant George Noel Bryan Haymes
Born on December 22nd 1896 in Ascot, George was the middle of three children born to author Robert Haymes and his wife, Elizabeth. Having been educated at The New Beacon School in Sevenoaks, he came to Dulwich at the start of 1911, a year after his elder brother, Thomas, had done so, and was a pupil for just over two years. He left in the spring of 1913, and went to Switzerland, where he continued his studies in Neuchatel.
Having returned home, the outbreak of war saw George enlist in the East Surrey Regiment, with whom he went to India the following year. In November 1917 he was granted a commission in the Indian Army and attached to the 89th Punjabis. The following May he went over to Palestine where he was attached to the 125th Napier Rifles. On the night of August 19th he had led a raiding party, but never returned, and is presumed to have died that night.
