Born on March 9th 1896, Athole was the only son of Stanley Ford, a clerk for a public company, and his wife, Mary. He was a particularly keen gymnast, being a member of the Gymnastics VI during his final year in 1913, and after leaving going on to become a keen member of the O.A. Gymnastics Club.
After war was declared in the summer of 1914 Athole, alongside his friend and fellow OA Keith Brown, signed up as a member of the Queen’s Westminster Rifles, going out to France on the 1st of November. Having spent nearly nine months in the trenches, he was serving at the Battle of Hooge on August 9th 1915 when he fell in action.
