Lieutenant Edwin Allen James Edwards
Edwin was born on March 13th 1895, the fourth and youngest child of bank clerk Herbert Edwards and his wife, Louisa. Whilst at the College he was not only a member of the O.T.C., but also of the Army Class, and upon leaving went straight to take his army entrance exams, passing top of the list. As a result, on the 1st of October 1912 he was awarded a commission in the Bedfordshire Regiment, later being promoted to Lieutenant in June 1914.
Not long after this, war was declared, and Edwin and his battalion were part of the British Expeditionary Force sent to the continent in August 1914, taking part in the Battles of Aisne and the Marne. On October 15th 1914 he was leading an attack near Givenchy when he was seriously wounded and subsequently invalided home to London. He was being treated at Fishmongers’ Hall Hospital, near London Bridge, when, on December 31st, he died as a result of his wounds.
