Lieutenant Russel John Daniels

Born on May 18th 1894, Russel was the fourth of eleven children born to greengrocer Joseph Daniels and his wife, Rosabel. He spent his final year of school at Dulwich, before leaving to take up a position working as a clerk in the office of a sugar merchants. In 1911 he took up a position in the Territorials, with the London Regiment, and two years later was promoted to Lieutenant. In March 1914 he took up a position with Coutts Bank, working as a junior clerk in the front office.
When the war was declared he was at first involved in the founding of the School of Instruction for Officers, at St. Albans, before going over to France in March 1915. At the start of the following year Russel transferred to the Scots Guards, taking a position as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, before that July being promoted to Lieutenant for the second time. On October 9th 1917 he was serving near Poelcappelle when he was severely wounded, and invalided home to England. Whilst recovering from these injuries he would contract TB, from which he died at Mundesley Sanatorium on August 28th 1918.
