Private Kenneth Gordon Cumming
Kenneth was born in Exeter on January 8th 1896, the eldest of five children of clergyman Samuel Cumming and his wife, Nellie. During his childhood the family moved around the country, from Devon, to Suffolk, then Essex, before coming to South London when he was around ten years old. Having spent two years at the College, he left at Christmas 1910, whilst a member of the Lower 3rd form.
In 1915 he enlisted as a member of the Surrey Yeomanry, and the following year proceeded across to France for the first time. Kenneth subsequently transferred to the 12th Service Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment, with whom he served in Italy, before returning to France in early 1918. He was involved in the fighting near Ypres that summer when he was killed on July 23rd, being buried in the cemetery at Lijssenthoek.
