Private Benjamin Stephen Cooper
Born on September 26th 1898, Benjamin was the third child, and eldest son, of commission agent Stephen Cooper and his wife Ada. He began his education at Homefield School in Sutton before coming to Dulwich, and was a member of the Science class of the Upper Fifth when he left the College in the summer of 1916.
In May of 1917 he enlisted as a private in the 2nd Service Battalion of the Honourable Artillery Company, subsequently going over to France in October of that year; not long afterwards his battalion was drafted to Italy and attached to the Italian Army. Whilst serving there he was involved in the recapture of the Grave di Papadopoli, for which he and the other members of the H.A.C. who were involved were presented with a commemorative medal. In late 1918 he was struck down with influenza whilst still in Italy, passing away in the 62nd General Hospital in Bordighera on October 31st.
