Lieutenant Arthur Michael Austin Collins
Arthur was born on November 23rd 1895 in Simla, India, the son of Patrick Collins, a civil servant working in the Indian Department of Education, and his wife Florence. After attending St. Joseph’s College in Nainital he subsequently came to Dulwich, where he was a boarder in Ivyholme. During his final year he was a member of the 3rd team for both rugby and cricket, and from the College went on to study at the Royal Military College in Sandhurst.
After passing out in late 1914 he was given a position as 2nd Lieutenant in the Indian Army, with his attachment to the 38th Dogras coming in January 1915. Arthur spent much of the next two years on the North West Frontier, involved in skirmishes with the local tribes, before being part of the Indian Expeditionary Force sent to Mesopotamia in April 1917; whilst there he saw service in the engagements at Shahra Ban, Jebel Hamrin and Kara Teppe. In February 1918 he returned to India, where he was for several months adjutant of the 2/41st Dogras, and then for a short time filled the same role for the 1st Brahmans. He died at Fatehgarh on October 28th, from injuries sustained in a motor accident.
