Captain Thomas Campbell
Thomas was born on 29th June 1885 in Ceylon, the son of New Zealand resident Neil Campbell. His schooling in Europe started at the Lycee Michelet Varves in Paris, before he subsequently came to Dulwich, where he was a boarder in the Orchard. Whilst at the College he was an accomplished sportsman, spending a season in the 2nd XV, as well as representing the College at Gymnastics and Fencing. After leaving he went on to the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, whom he also represented at Gymnastics – once top scoring in the annual match against Sandhurst – as well as twice winning the Grand Concours Medal for French. In July 1905 he took a commission with the Royal Garrison Artillery, being promoted to Lieutenant in 1908.
He was still with the R.G.A. when war broke out, and in late 1914 was promoted to Captain. In August 1915 Thomas went across to France for the first time, serving with the 45th Siege Battery, before in April of the following year being transferred to the 19th. He was serving near Mametz Wood on the Somme when he was seriously wounded on 25th July; he was to never fully recover, passing away in hospital at Abbeville on August 3rd 1916.
