Lance Corporal Charles Shirley Williams Cadman
Born 11th March 1865, Charles was the elder son of Charles Schultz Cadman, an umbrella manufacturer, and Ellen Cadman; he had one brother, Frank, who also attended the College, and three sisters. He left Dulwich in April 1877 from the Upper 2nd and joined his father’s company, being employed as an umbrella maker’s assistant. Later he bought his own shop and made umbrellas himself.
Despite being 50 at the time, Charles signed up in 1915 and had been a part of the Royal Army Service Corps for a week before he was shipped over to France, where he was known by his men for having a very good voice and would sing to them before battles to calm their nerves. Despite having survived past the Armistice, Charles died on December 14th 1918 whilst still in France from wounds received; he lies buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery at Wimille. He was survived by his wife, Eleanor, and his daughter, Eleanor Shirley Cadman, who was 17 at the time of his death.
