Sergeant Edward George Braddon

Born 6th December 1861 in India, Edward was the son of Sir Edward Nicholas Coventry Braddon, the Premier of Tasmania and Member of the Commonwealth Parliament, and his wife, Amy. His brother Henry, who was also an Alleynian, went on to have a prolific rugby career, being part of the first ever New Zealand international side. Before joining the College, Edward was educated in both Dusseldorf and Caen, and had grown up travelling around the world. He left Dulwich in 1878 whilst in the Lower 5th and had returned to Sydney by 1890. Here he raised sheep and cattle before joining the mining industry, with which he worked in New Guinea, New Zealand, East Africa and British Guiana.

During the war, Edward served with the 25th Battalion Royal Fusiliers in East Africa. He died from wounds in Dar-es-Salaam, present day Tanzania, on February 14th 1917, and is buried in the War Cemetery there.
