Able Seaman Gilbert Saunders Bate
Born 30th December 1885, Gilbert was the son of Joseph and Fanny Bate. Having joined the College in 1900, he left in 1902 whilst in the Upper 4th. Upon leaving Dulwich, Gilbert signed an apprenticeship agreement with his father and began to train in the Merchant services. In December 1909 Gilbert completed his training and was certificated as a Second Mate of a foreign-going ship and as a First Mate in June 1911. A year later, in December 1912, Gilbert left England on the ship Somali and went to Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka), becoming a tea grower until the war broke out.
As a trained sailor, Gilbert signed up with the Royal Naval Division in 1914, having returned to England. In mid-1915 he was shipped across to Gallipoli, but fell ill on the trip over, passing away from dysentery on 29th August 1915. He is memorialised at the Chatham Naval Memorial.
