Sergeant John William Alexandre
Jack, as he was known, was born on 8th August 1875, the only son of Captain John Alexandre, a resident of Jersey. After leaving Dulwich he went on to qualify as an engineer at Vauxhall Engineering Works, subsequently working as an engineer in London.
Upon the declaration of War he signed up as a member of the Public Schools Battalion, and was in training for around a year before going to France in the autumn of 1915, assigned to the Machine Gun Section. During the next eighteen months he saw heavy fighting, serving at many major engagements and only taking one nine day period of home leave. On February 4th 1917 he was killed by an exploding shell at the Battle of Ancre; being survived by his widow Annie and their three children.
