TW Rutherford Career Description
T.W. Rutherford
Served an apprenticeship with Messrs. Richardson, Westgarth & Co. at Hartlepool, from there he proceeded to Glasgow Uni., where he was in the Rugby XV during 1909/10. After completing his studies he was employed by Messrs. John McNeil & Co at Govan for whom he went out to the Philippine Islands early in 1913 to superintend the erection of a sugar factory, having previously gained experience of such work in Barbados, B.W.I. On outbreak of war he joined the P.S. Bn. [Public Schools Battalion], Royal Fusiliers, at Epsom and in Nov. ’14 was granted a Comm. in the 11th Bn. Yorkshire Regt. (the Green Howards) at Darlington, from which he was transferred to the 6th Bn. with which he left for the Dardanelles on 1st July 15. He was a skilful artist and a musician of some ability, always being in [demand?] in promoting the social welfare and happiness of the men. His musical sketches were a feature of every “guest night” in the mess of the Green Howards and he was also a caricaturist of no mean merit. He was for a time in charge of the [Bn. scouts?] and later asst. instructor to a brigade class in field sketching, his talent in map-making having been brought to notice. He lived up to a great tradition and the loss of so good a comrade was much felt by all who knew him. He was killed in Gallipoli but his grave there has never been discovered.
