Captain Cyril Robert Wightman Mountain
Born on June 15th 1896, Cyril was the middle of three children born to printer and stationer Frank Mountain and his wife Minnie. He spent four years at Emmanuel School before, in September 1910, coming to Dulwich, where he was to remain a pupil for the next five years. During his time at the College he was a committed member of the O.T.C., rising to the rank of Sergeant, and a keen rugby player, regularly turning out for the 1st XV in his final year.
Cyril left school at Easter 1915 in order to take up a commission in the Cheshire Regiment, and spent the next year training with his unit in England, going over to France for the first time a year later. He received a knee injury whilst serving near Vimy, and as a result was invalided home for a time, before returning to the front in January 1917. He spent the next seven months engaged in heavy fighting around Messines, during which he was promoted to Captain, and was later chosen to represent his battalion at a review held for the Duke of Connaught. At the end of July he was reassigned to Ypres, where he was placed in command of a company. Shortly afterwards, on August 5th 1917, he was killed in action near Westhoek when he was struck in the head by a shell.
