John Benjamin Knowlton Preedy
On leaving proceeded to King’s Coll. & Univ. Coll. London & in 1909 took his MA degree with distinction in Classical Archaeology. For a year he was on the staff of the County Grammar School, Melton Mowbray & in 1911 became a secretary in the Lon. Univ. Extension Dept. To the administration of tutorial classes in London he brought energy of character, fine judgement and enthusiasm; physically he was tireless and he loved to visit the Lower classes, and to help and encourage them in their work. When war broke out, he joined the Univ. of Lon. OTC being gazetted Second Lieutenant in November 1914 and was given a post on the staff of the Corps. His services were afterwards utilized in training cadets at Lichfield. In June 1915 he was promoted Lieutenant and in July 1917 he joined the 2nd London Regt. going to the front in September. He was killed in France by the bursting of a shell on 26 October during an advance at POELCAPPELLE.
