Lieutenant Edgar Schult

Edgar was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on March 1st 1896, the second of three children, and only son, of German merchant Robert Schult and his British wife, Florence. When he was three the family moved to England, although his father’s work saw him still heavily involved in the Caribbean. He came to Dulwich at the beginning of 1911 and was a pupil for the next four years. After leaving in the spring of 1914 he took up a position working for the same firm of merchants as his father.
Upon the outbreak of war that summer Edgar enlisted in the 7th Battalion, London Regiment, with whom he went over to the front for the first time the following June. Whilst in France he served through the Battle of Loos before returning to England that November to take up a commission. He was gazetted to the 16th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers with whom he went to Ireland where he was involved in the suppression of the Easter Rising. In September 1916 he was transferred to the West Surreys with whom he went to the front once more, the beginning of just over a year of almost unbroken combat service. On October 26th 1917, whilst serving with a Trench Mortar Battery, he was severely wounded by a shell blast, succumbing to his injuries two days later.
