After leaving at Easter 1910 he went to Oundle, where he was to spend a further four years. After finishing his education he was for a time employed by Morrish, Grant & Co., a London- based firm of chartered accountants.

In July 1915 Robert enlisted as a member of the Artists Rifles and that November took up a commission in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He spent the winter in England training before being sent to the front for the first time in July 1916. He was serving in the Ypres salient when he was killed, whilst leading a small advance patrol, on October 9th.
