Lance Corporal Douglas Clifton Taylor
Douglas was born on Boxing Day 1890, the youngest of six children of James Taylor, who worked at the Bank of England, and his wife, Octavia. He came to Dulwich in September 1904, having previously been educated at Manor House School, next to Clapham Common, and after just over three years at the College left at the end of 1907 whilst a member of the Modern Upper Fifth. Having left he followed his father in working at the Bank of England and in 1911 was assigned to the Newcastle branch, where he was to work for the next five years.
In December 1915 he volunteered as a member of the Artists Rifles, subsequently going over to France with them for the first time in April 1916. He then spent over eighteen months serving at the front, during which time he was promoted to Lance-Corporal, before, in late 1917 being placed on the list of those to receive commissions. Before his could be granted however he fell in action, on December 30th 1917, at Platt’s Ridge, near Cambrai.
