2nd Lieutenant Leonard Justly Rawlings

Leonard was born on July 1st 1897, the younger of two children, and only son, of colonial merchant Justly Rawlings and his wife, Julia. He started at the College shortly after his thirteenth birthday, in the summer of 1910, and was a pupil for the next three years. After leaving he went to a boarding school in Roubaix, France to continue his studies.
When the war was declared Leonard was in Roubaix; he returned to England at once and that October, despite being aged only 17, enlisted in the Inns of Court O.T.C. After several months training he was gazetted to a commission in the Northampton Regiment in February 1915 and was posted to the 8th Battalion with whom he was to remain for over a year. In May 1916 he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion, going over to the front for the first time, and spent the next six months on the Somme. On November 7th he was serving in a front-line trench near Les Boeufs when a German shell struck, killing both Leonard and his commanding officer.
