Rifleman Wilhelm Ernst Theodor Schultze
Born on November 4th 1895, Theodor was the son of German-born export merchant William Schultze and his British wife, Caroline. He joined the College in the summer of 1908 and was a pupil for the next four years. After leaving in the summer of 1912, whilst a member of the Modern Upper Fifth, he took employment, like his father, working in the export business.
Upon the outbreak of war Theodor attempted to enlist straight away but was not allowed to because of his role working in exports; he did, howeve,r sign up to be a special constable. In late 1915 he was allowed to leave his business role and enlisted as a member of the Queen’s Westminster Rifles in January 1916. That July he went over to France for the first time and spent the next two months serving on the Somme. On September 7th he was killed by shrapnel from a shell blast whilst returning to the trenches from his billet.
