2nd Lieutenant George Gordon Lauder
Born on October 21st 1894, Gordon was the sixth of seven children born to Irish photographer Samuel Lauder and his London-born wife, Annie; the family was at this time resident in Dublin, although they would move to London shortly afterwards. He went on to join the College at the start of 1908, the middle of three brothers to do so, and was a Dulwich boy for the next three and a half years. After leaving in the summer of 1911 he studied at the Slade School of Art, now a part of University College, London.
The outbreak of war saw Gordon take up a commission in the 3rd Battalion of the King’s Liverpool Regiment, with whom he went over to France for the first time in the early part of 1915. He was engaged in heavy front line fighting for the next eighteen months, during which time, in March 1916, he was transferred to the 1st Battalion. On July 30th that year he lost his life, killed in action in the attack at Delville Wood, on the Somme.
