Sapper Frank Henry Vickers
Born on November 14th 1889, Frank was the son of Henry Vickers and Caroline Reynolds, and had six siblings. On leaving school he went straight to working in an insurance office, but left soon after to study auctioneering and surveying. In 1911 however, Frank moved to New Zealand to try his hand at many different occupations. He returned to England in May 1914, at the end of what had been a round the world sailing trip. He later wrote took to writing articles about his experiences, which he most likely would have continued, however later in August 1914 he joined the ‘First Hundred Thousand,’ and was sent to the Bulford Camp in Wiltshire, but arranged a transfer to the New Zealand Forces, with whom he was sent out to Egypt. He was at first in the Army Service Corps, before later being drafted into the Royal Engineers, with whom he served at the Dardanelles. Frank died of fever on 30th May 1915 whilst on Malta, and is buried at Imtarfa Military Cemetery on the island.
