2nd Lieutenant Henry Graham
Henry was born on February 17th 1899, the elder of two sons of Henry and Florence Graham. He joined Dulwich from Felixstowe College at the beginning of 1912; a few months later his younger brother Robert also joined the College. Henry was a pupil for four years, leaving in the spring of 1916; he had intended to go on to Sandhurst, but instead took up a cadetship he had been offered in the Indian Army, based at Quetta.
By the early part of 1917 he had qualified, and was entitled to a position in the Cavalry, one he was rejected from on the grounds of his youth, instead being given a position in the 74th Punjabis. Shortly afterwards he was sent to Mesopotamia, where he was attached to the 67th Punjabis, who at that point were based near Baghdad. During that summer, on June 28th, he was leading a cavalry patrol near Balad Ruz when they saw a group of Arabs attacking a British convoy. Having pursued the group away from the convoy they were pursuing them when they encountered a much larger group, with Henry and his patrol being surrounded and wiped out. His younger brother Robert, also an OA, died of illness whilst a member of the Royal Navy in the following year.
