2nd Lieutenant John James Fraser Shand
John was born on March 31st 1898 in Portsmouth, the only son of Rear-Admiral Jonathan Shand, a surgeon in the Royal Navy, and his wife, Rose. He joined the College from the Prep in April 1910 and was a pupil for the next five and a half years. During his time at Dulwich he was a boarder and, in 1914 and 1915, his final two summers, a member of the 2nd XI cricket team.
After leaving Dulwich in late 1915 John took a place at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, passing out the following May to take up a commission in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He subsequently spent several months in further training at Aldershot, before being posted to the 185th Heavy Battery at Salonica in February 1917. He spent the next few months in combat in Greece and Macedonia and was still serving there when he was killed in action on the Struma Front, on August 6th 1917.
