Lieutenant Frederick Hughes
Frederick was born on September 27th 1886, the only son of Edward and Elizabeth Hughes. He spent time at the Prep before going on to attend the College, starting at the beginning of 1900. He was at Dulwich for almost three years, leaving at the end of 1902, having last been in the Classical Remove. After finishing school he went on to study at Crystal Palace School of Engineering, and went on to specialise in the construction of sewage works.
When war came in the summer of 1914 Frederick enlisted in the Royal Sussex Regiment, although he very shortly was assigned to an Officer Training Corps, based at Pembroke College, Cambridge, which he left in April 1915 to take up a commission in the South Lancashire Regiment. That September he was sent to France, attached to the 1st Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment, and subsequently on the Salonica Front in Greece. After nearly a year on the line there he was killed in action on October 11th 1916 and lies buried in the Military Cemetery at Struma.
